How do I know ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus is updating correctly?
By default, ESET security products check every hour for a new update and are updated at least once a day with new virus definitions and occasional program component updates. To verify that the latest virus signature updates have been received, follow the steps below.
Version 5
- Open the main program window by double-clicking the ESET icon
next to the system clock or by clicking Start
All Programs
ESET
ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
- Click Update.
- If you see Virus signature database is up to date then no update is necessary. You can also verify a successful update by checking the Last successful update date and time (see Figure 1-1), or by comparing the latest virus signature database version (below) to your own:
The current Version of virus signature database is: 6686

- If the messages in step 3 are not displayed, click Update virus signature database.
- If the virus signature database updates successfully you are finished. If you receive an error regarding inconsistent update information, click Cancel and then click Product activation.

- In the Product Activation window, select Activate using a Username and Password and click Next.
- Verify that your username and password are entered correctly and click Activate.

- Click Update from the main menu on the left (see Figure 1-3).
- The Update status should read: Update is not necessary... or Virus signature database is up to date depending on your version.
You can also verify a successful update by checking the Last successful update date and time in the middle of the window or by comparing the latest virus signature database version below to yours.The current Version of virus signature database is: 6686

- If the virus signature database successfully updates, you are finished. If you receive an error regarding an incorrect username and password, click Cancel and then click Username and Password setup. The License Details window will appear.
Verify that your username and password are entered correctly. The following are EXAMPLES only:
